PCAO is more than the work of just a few caring individuals. We bring together a wide range of people with lived experience, as well as professionals and organizations with deep knowledge and expertise in developing unique solutions for building stronger, healthier communities.

Nicole Cunningham (she/her)
​Executive Director

  • Nicole Cunningham (she/her) serves as Executive Director for Prevent Child Abuse Oregon (PCAO). Nicole studied at the University of Wyoming where she received her Bachelor’s Degrees in Social Work and Psychology. Before joining the PCAO team in 2022, Nicole served as the statewide Abuse Prevention Coordinator for the Oregon Attorney General’s Sexual Assault Task Force. Nicole previously spent three years serving as a Child Protective Services caseworker for the State of Oregon, before transitioning to upstream prevention work. She also held an array of community and campus-based roles in Wyoming, including response to and prevention of sexual violence, domestic violence, suicide, substance misuse, crime victim advocacy, and youth diversion out of the criminal justice system. Informed by her own lived experience and the hundreds of families she’s worked with throughout her career, Nicole is passionate about centering hope and creativity in all PCAO does to uplift prevention statewide. In her free time you can find Nicole exploring Oregon’s forests and beaches, caring for her plants, and enjoying Portland’s world class food scene.

Barbara Carranza (she/her)
Operations Consultant

  • Barbara Carranza brings 40 years of experience overseeing programs and projects related to children  and families. She retired from the State of Oregon in 2011 to spend time with her grandchildren. After  they were all attending school, she looked for an opportunity to continue her support of children and  families. In 2021, Barbara began providing operations coordination under contract for PCAO.  

    She oversees the PCAO budget, assists in developing grant applications and making grant reports,  tracks income and expenses, processes payments, and provides administrative support for board  meetings. She assisted PCAO in receiving it's charter from Prevent Child Abuse America in 2022. 

    Barbara hold a bachelor's degree from Western Oregon University in Multi-Disciplinary Studies,  including Psychology, Sociology, and Business Administration. She began her career with eight years  in non-profits serving as a recreation coordinator for children, youth and adults with developmentally  disabilities. Next, she served as City of Salem recreation coordinator for persons with developmental or physical limitations. Finally, she had a 33 year career in Oregon state government working in multiple  agencies.  

    In her last position, at the Oregon Commission on Children and Families (OCCF) she served in several  roles over 13 years. Initially, she served as Budget and Operations Manager. Most of those years, she  managed the Juvenile Crime Prevention Advisory Committee (JCAP). JCPAC is a large body of state,  local and tribal partners representing cross-sector disciplines). They oversaw funds from the federal  Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. This included grants to 36 counties and 9 tribes, as well as competitive grants and training to address Disproportionate Minority Contact and  Confinement, and Gender Specific Services. In addition to these positions, she provided coordination  and assistance in other OCCF programs across the age continuum from Healthy Start, Relief Nurseries  and Child Care to Court Appointed Special Advocates. 

    Highlights of her work in other state agencies include: volunteer services coordinator at MacLaren  School for Boys; executive assistant in developing administrative rules and issuing revenue bonds at  Oregon Housing Agency; scheduling and correspondence for the governor in the Governor's Office;  professional service contracting and legislative legal references at the Executive Department Budget  and Management Division; policy manager, administrative rules coordinator, and coordinator of Child  Abuse Prevention and Treatment (CAPTA) funds for runaway and homeless youth services at  Department of Human Services Child Services Division.

Natalie Gordon (they/she)
Collaboration Coordinator

  • Natalie Gordon (they/she) serves as the Collaboration Coordinator for Prevent Child Abuse Oregon (PCAO). Natalie studied at Oregon State University where they obtained a BA in sociology and later received a Masters of Instruction and Curriculum from Concordia University with a focus in Environmental Education and Early Childhood Education. Before PCAO, Natalie served in early childhood education as a professional development trainer and infant toddler quality improvement specialist for child care providers. Natalie is passionate about early childhood development, environmental access/sustainability and LGBTQ+ sexual health education. If you encounter Natalie in their free time, they might be, dancing zouk, playing video games, or playing piano- ask Natalie to tell you more, they love sharing hobbies and interests with others!

Arielle Hacker (she/her)
Strategic Initiatives Coordinator

  • Arielle Hacker (she/her) serves as the Strategic Initiatives Coordinator at Prevent Child Abuse Oregon (PCAO). Arielle studied at Indiana University-Bloomington where she obtained a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Social Work with a focus in Mental Health and Addiction. Before PCAO, Arielle served as project manager for Portland State University's SAMHSA Campus Suicide Prevention grant and co-created an asynchronous suicide prevention training course called Care. Ask. Connect. Arielle has also worked extensively with people who use drugs, as well as people who've experienced structural violence, child abuse and neglect, and interpersonal violence. In her free time, Arielle enjoys drawing, reading, watching scary movies, and exploring the PNW with her miniature schnauzer, Lily.

Grace Fortson (they/she)

  • Grace is a passionate advocate with a background in gender and migration scholar advocacy before focusing on children’s wellbeing in Oregon. They are passionate about intersectional and holistic approaches to change that center our most marginalized neighbors. While they pursue their Master's degree in Political Theory, they are honored to serve as Program Assistant.

Susan Lindauer (she/her)
Resource Development Consultant

  • Susan Lindauer brings more than 25 years of experience in advocating for prevention and child and youth well-being programs, resource development, strategic planning, and advancing cross-system alignment for children and families. She holds a dual master’s degree in Social Service and Law and Social Policy from Bryn Mawr College’s Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research, and a bachelor’s degree from Pacific Lutheran University.

    From 2004 to 2011, Susan served as the first Resource Developer for the Oregon Commission on Children and Families, where she built strategic public-private partnerships and leveraged $6.2 million in private, federal, and foundation funding. In 2011, she was appointed Executive Director of the Children’s Trust Fund of Oregon (CTFO), where she successfully advocated for increased federal and state investments in child abuse prevention and family well-being. During her tenure, she partnered with Portland State University and Prevent Child Abuse Oregon to develop county-level prevention data and collaborated with statewide leaders to create Oregon’s first Blueprint for Prevention.

    In 2016, Susan stepped down as Executive Director of CTFO and was appointed by the Dean of Trinity Episcopal Cathedral to a three-year term as Senior Warden, serving in a role comparable to Board Chair. She is also an entrepreneur and co-founder of Lindauer Confections, created in partnership with a classically trained French pastry chef. Her confections are inspired by her family’s Northern California farm, Lindauer River Ranch, where she is a third-generation owner and partner.

    In 2020, Susan joined the national Children’s Trust Fund Alliance as Senior Associate for Membership, supporting and strengthening Children’s Trust Funds nationwide. Since 2023, she has provided resource development and strategic consulting services to Prevent Child Abuse Oregon, which originated as an advisory committee of the Children’s Trust Fund of Oregon during her tenure as Executive Director.
