1. Talk About What Makes Your Family Your Family
Start with a conversation: What values matter most in your family? (examples: Love, safety, joy, culture, honesty, tradition, chosen family, community.) Invite everyone to name something that helps your family feel connected and strong. This creates space to recognize all kinds of families and what makes each one special.
2. Create Symbols That Tell Your Story
Using the flag template, choose colors, shapes, words, or drawings that represent your family. A heart might symbolize care, stars might represent hope, and animals or objects can reflect shared memories, ancestors, or community. Encourage youth to include symbols that show who they are and who supports them.
3. Share the Meaning Behind Your Flag
Take turns explaining your design: Why did you choose those colors? What does each symbol mean? What parts represent your family’s strengths or hopes? This step helps children and adults practice listening, storytelling, and honoring each person’s identity and experiences.
